Designed to have amazing glide, but feel incredibly nimble from the tail, and super solid when you are hanging toes. This is the latest evolution in Longboard SUP design.

With a narrower nose, straight midsection, and aggressive hip, this board is crazy responsive for its size, yet still very user-friendly.

Sunova Boards are based on 2 principles Board Construction and Board Design

Board Construction: Sunova has turned to using natural materials, like balsa and paulownia wood, which have enabled them to construct higher performing boards than could ever have previously been achieved with conventional materials.

Board Design: In addition, these natural materials have made it possible for the Sunova Team to implement new and radical designs into their boards. Like Bert’s own creation of “the Parabolic Rails”, which has revolutionized surfing technology and utilizes the forces of true surfing action occurring at the rails. Giving much more direct flex and spring by moving the mechanics to both rails and not relying on only the center stringer.

DIRECTIONAL CONTROL: The length means you track nice and straight while paddling but the rocker allows re-direct nicely on the wave.

WAVE CATCHING ABILITY: As mentioned earlier it’ll catch just about anything.

WHAT YOU THOUGHT OF WHEN YOU DESIGNED IT?:

This board is an Evolution of many of our longboard SUP designs, it came about due to the ever growing Longboard SUP community with 10ft plus, and 9ft plus divisions at events like the LSR in Bali, and their demand for boards that can do it all.

Scream down the face on double overhead bombs with control, hang toes with ease, redirect in the pocket and deliver clean roundhouses. Or surf knee high slop, whatever conditions you’ve got.

WHAT IT POSSIBLY COMPROMISES ON THEN?:

Being a longer board means it can nosedive in steeper waves if you are going off the top, but generally, it is a great all round performer.

SHAPE DETAILS | DESIGN INFO

OUTLINE:

Pulled in traditional clean longboard outline, subtle flyer, rounded pin. The outline is relatively balanced with the widest point in the middle, it does carry some width to around 3ft from the tail before pulling in to a performance shortboard outline, so the board can be pumped for speed easily and can be surfed freely off the tail. If you have never owned one, you will basically freak out at how well this board can surf.

RAILS:

Low profile, shortboard style. The really low rails do a few different jobs, fat rails are harder to bury, especially at speed, so the low rails make the board super sensitive and responsive in turns. Because our stringers are in our rail line, the board has a greater range of flex and spring back. The low rail is more submerged when walking and nose riding so the board is nice and stable to walk with water flowing over the rails holding them down. Lastly, the bottom edge through the tail is quite tucked under, this gives the board good hold into late drops and a smooth ride in general.

ROCKER:

Full performance rocker. This amount of rocker fits nicely into tighter parts of the wave, yet it is still flat enough to carry without needing to be pumped, but it can be pumped for speed with ease if the wave requires. The curve is an even curve all the way out the tail, so it still carries speed even if you are standing right on the tail. The board has a nice squirt or acceleration if you stomp your back foot, as opposed to a tail flip which is like hitting the brakes.

BOTTOM:

Concave to Flat bottom. The concave up front helps lock the board in during nose rides and gives it a more controlled feeling, whilst the flatter rear keeps it quick and agile. Additionally, the general Sunova construction with the flexible bottom adds another dimension that reduces the need for contours.

DECK:

Standard deck roll. Not much going on here apart from thickness distribution. Having the nose and tail quite refined lowers swing weight and keeps the board feeling sensitive.

FINS:

2+1. This fin set up works well with the longboard theme, the single offers good stability while walking, and good direction while on the nose. The side bites come in handy when you want to rip some turns.

FINAL STATEMENT:

If you are looking for a performance longboard that rips off the tail in any sized conditions, has enough hold to scream down the face hanging toes with complete control, but is still ridiculously comfortable, the Shorty is the board for you!
